A closer look at the Draft Fiscal Jurisdiction Act.

Tax jurisdiction is a key element when it comes to the authority of a country to implement tax regulations to increase tax revenues. It is therefore no surprise that Suriname’s recovery plan includes the intention to introduce an extension of the Suriname’s tax jurisdiction. The draft Fiscal Jurisdiction Act provides a broad definition of Suriname. What will be the effect of the extension of the tax jurisdiction and who will be affected if the Draft Act will indeed become law?

Biography: Cheryl Leeflang

Cheryl is an all-round tax adviser. She has worked as a tax professional in Curacao, the Netherlands, Canada and is currently Of Counsel at HBN Law & Tax in Suriname. Over the years she gained vast experience in wage tax, social security, and pension issues. She has served amongst others, real estate development companies, banks, and insurance companies.

In Canada, her focus was primarily on Wills, Trusts, and other estate matters. During her lengthy career Cheryl has worked for KPMG Meijburg & Co, KPMG Tax & Legal Services, her own tax practice Reuijl & Leeflang Tax Advisers in Curaçao and Law firm Shea Nerland Calnan LLP Barristers and Solicitors in Calgary, Canada. Cheryl obtained a Master’s degree in Dutch tax law at Leiden University.
